Canadian exhibitors were initially projecting sales at FOODEX, held in Chiba, Japan March 1-4 at $16.5 million. The devastating earthquake of March 11—and ensuing events—make these predictions uncertain, but it is hoped the country will recover and that Canadian suppliers will be there to help.

Canada Pavilion at FoodexFOODEX Japan is the largest food and beverage tradeshow in Asia Pacific with almost 75,000 visitors and 2,400-plus exhibitors. This year, 29 Canadian companies, five industry associations, two provinces and two federal departments participated in the Canada Pavilion.

"It was our first international tradeshow and was an excellent experience for us," said Canada Brand member Bruce Holbrook of Isobel & Company, an Ottawa-based bakery that makes colourful, hand-decorated cookies. "We had someone who wanted to place an order with us on the spot, and several other interested buyers we will follow-up with, when the time is appropriate."

A networking reception was hosted at the Canadian Embassy to introduce Canadian exhibitors to Japanese importers, buyers and media contacts who were attending the show.

Participants provided photos of their products in advance. The Embassy then arranged for the photos to be projected on-screen as individuals and their company were introduced.

"This made it easy for buyers to see which product each individual was representing," said Sharan Evani, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Senior Market Development Officer for Japan. "It also gave them a head start for networking throughout the evening and for deciding whose booth to visit at the show."
